Let them learn by doing. Introducing iLife ’08 and iWork ’08. Apple Education brochure (2007)

This large, full-color brochure measures 11×17 inches and folds out into a 2-up layout with a total measurement of 22×17 inches. The brochure was provided to Apple Education customers and explains how iWork ’08 and iLife ’08 could be used in the classroom.

The cover includes three students using white MacBook notebooks with USB science probes in a classroom. Upon opening the brochure, the first spread is a striking photo of a teacher working with a student with an all-black facing page with white text (in the then-current Apple Myriad font). The text reads:

“There has never been a more exciting time to be an educator, because there have never been so many creative ways to connect with students. When you bring movies, music, and photography into the classroom, amazing things happen. Core subjects come to life; students are more inspired to communicate and collaborate; and without even realizing it, they get an enormous head start with 21st-century skills. We believe that creativity is the key to unlocking every child’s genius, and that media-rich learning is the key to greater creativity. The time has come to reimagine what’s possible, and to redefine our expectations. Rethink.”

The center, 2-page spread is on an all-white background and outlines six features of iLife ’08 pictured along with a white MacBook. The text reads:

“Grab their attention, and don’t let go: Introducing iLife ’08. Incredibly easy tools for incredibly amazing schoolwork. Meet iLife ’08, a fully integrated suite of digital authoring tools—iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb and iDVD. Together, they let students create amazing projects such as photo books, slideshows, documentary movies, podcasts, music, and more. The tools all work together beautifully and couldn’t be more intuitive: learn just one, and you’ll soon master them all. iLife ’08 is simple enough to build confidence in kindergartners, yet powerful enough to engage the most media-savvy high schoolers—not to mention teachers and parents…”

The third and final spread, also on an all-white background, features iWork ’08 and a photo of a silver iMac. Its text reads:

“Productivity has a new best friend: Introducing iWork ’08. Simple, powerful tools that teach students real-world skills. Meet Keynote, Pages, and Numbers- otherwise known as iWork ’08. Whether you want to create cinema-quality presentations, exciting reports, or visually compelling spreadsheets, iWork ’08 themes give you a giant head start. Even the most dynamic features-from charts to movies to animation-can be added to projects in a flash, and you can easily import from and export to Microsoft Office and AppleWorks…”

The back of the brochure uses the headline “Inspiration enclosed.” It features product boxes of iWork ’08 and iLife ’08 and includes Site License pricing and contact information.

The future has already arrived Apple Education brochure (April 2008)

This brochure was sent to education customers and had purple/violet space-themed cover art that resembled the Mac OS X Leopard (10.5) default wallpaper. It had the text: “The future has already arrived at www.apple.com/education/hslabs.” The text is printed in Apple Myriad, Apple’s corporate font used at the time.

The back of the mailing is all white and included address and postal information. The folded piece measures 8.5 x 14.25 inches.

The bottom of the mailing includes the following text:

iPad packaging (Generation 9, 2021)

The iPad Generation 9 was released on September 14, 2021. Apple described the device: “The 10.2-inch iPad features A13 Bionic, Center Stage, True Tone, and now starts with double the storage, all at an incredible value.”

This packaging is from a 10-pack education purchase. It is the same envelope-like container that is included with a single iPad in retail packaging, but only one is included in a bulk 10-pack purchase. The items include the following (all measuring 4 3/16 x 6.75 inches):

4-color pamphlet (the inside briefly describes features including Apple Pencil, Top Button, Touch ID, Lightning Connector, Control Center, and Dock and App Switcher; the back describes the Smart Connector and Tips app)

Lanyard (black, red, white logotype, c. 1990)

This lanyard is black with a red wooden bead accent. Its style appears to place it in the 1990s. This lanyard was acquired from the estate of a former Apple Education employee and was likely used in the 1990s at education events.

The cord of the lanyard features a white Apple logotype in Apple Garamond, Apple’s corporate font used between 1984 and 2003. The manufacturer is shown on a white tag printed with he name KOOCHY gear.

I have found similarly designed items by this manufacturer on eBay branded with other company logos. Although the company is no longer active, it now appears to be associated with the company PROMOVISION, specializing in custom lanyards.

I also have a similar version of this lanyard in my collection without the manufacturer tag.

The Golden Apple Club ceramic tile (1992)

This white ceramic tile was acquired from the estate of a former Apple Education employee. It is printed with a negative-space white Apple logo on a shimmering, metallic gold circle with the words “THE GOLDEN APPLE CLUB,” also printed in metallic gold. The tile’s border is surrounded with dark-green-printed shamrocks and the words “Ireland ’92” in an Old English typeface.

I was able to find a few references to the “The Golden Apple Club” in my research. One source in the Online Archive of California in the Department of Special Collections and University Archives at Stanford shows a listing in a collection archive titled, “Guide to the Apple Computer, Inc. Records M1007” (1998). The reference catalogs the item as “Vanity Press Items” with the entry: The Golden Apple Club: the best of the best., 1991. The complete record specifies that the university collection includes approximately 600 linear feet of items from 1977–1998 including: “organizational charts, annual reports, company directories, internal communications, engineering reports, design materials, press releases, manuals, public relations materials, human resource information, videotapes, audiotapes, software, hardware, and corporate memorabilia.”

A former Apple Regional Sales Manager on LinkedIn lists that he was a “Golden Apple Sales Award Winner” in 1998.

The long-running podcast RetroMacCast Episode 261 (October 21, 2012): “Frito Residue,” includes a reference to a 18K gold Golden Apple Club pin (selling for $1,049.99) and later included a conversation about the Golden Apple Club program. The podcast host discussed several Golden Apple Club items he had purchased in a kit, including a deck of cards, heavy-duty black plastic luggage tags, a neck pillow in a gray vinyl pouch, and a small portfolio—all with the Golden Apple Club logo. The “Club” was described as a program for sales representatives who had exceeded planned sales goals for a fiscal year. Reportedly, one of the “prizes” for Golden Apple Club members included a trip.

Based upon this information, this tile may have been received by a Golden Apple Club award winner on a trip to Ireland in 1992.

Perhaps worth noting, Apple has had facilities in Cork, Ireland, since 1980 and specifies that Cork “serves as Apple’s European headquarters, supporting customers across the continent and beyond.” There is no indication that this trip was to Cork, and this connection is pure speculation.

The tile measures 4.25 x 4.25 inches, 3/16-inch thick, and has a cork bottom.

Apple Unified School System notepads (c. 1988)

These Apple Unified School System notepads feature the logotype for the Apple Unified School System at the bottom center with a yellow-gold logo above that depicts a highly stylized image of a three houses with people (perhaps students and teachers) above represented by a combination of shapes and whitespace. The top of the notepads have a black Apple logo.

I have been unable to date these notepads specifically, but an Apple Corporate Timeline on the Mac Mothership website reports that in March 1987, Apple Marketing introduced “the Apple Unified School System and Apple’s Education Purchase Program (EPP) in a shared commitment with educators to integrate computers into the learning process.”

Each notepad measures 8.5 x 11 inches and is bound with a tearaway edge.

My research has not yielded much specific information on the Apple Unified School System. The OAC (Online Archive of California) contains a listing for an Apple Unified School System report at Stanford, but it is not available online (and the report is undated). An online history of the 1985 “edutainment” software Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? claims that the Apple Unified School System helped popularize this game when Apple’s “nationwide computer-in-the-classroom infrastructure” was implemented in the late 1980s.

Apple Heartland Education Clock (c. 1995)

This LED clock features a transparent display with large LED-style numerals that display the time and a blinking separator of four stacked bars. It is constructed with a matte black metal frame with a black plastic base that contains the electronics, battery, and buttons to set the time on the back. The transparent LED screen has a green-gray tint.

The  front of the clock features the Apple logo in white on a black background, and a white panel reads “Heartland Education” printed in the Apple Garamond typeface in black, Apple’s corporate font that was used 1984–2003.

The clock runs on a 357 watch battery. It measures 4.375 inches tall, 3.75 inches wide, with a base measuring 2.375 inches deep, and the body just over 0.25 inch thick.

This clock was previously employee-owned and the date is approximate, based upon its design. The item is undated.

Apple Education Event badge holder with pockets and lanyard (black, white logo, 2015)

This black Apple Education badge holder was used approximately between 2003–2017 at Apple Education events, workshops, and conferences where Apple was presenting and/or otherwise contributing. 

This badge holder is black nylon and accommodates a 4×3-inch name badge. The front includes a Velcro pocket closure with a zipper compartment inside that can hold business cards or credit-card-sized items. The front is printed with a white Apple logo and the word Education in the Myriad font, Apple’s corporate font used between 2003–2017.

The back of the badge includes two loops designed to hold pens and a small pocket.

This badge holder is one of many I have used over the years at Apple events. The badge measures 6.625 x 5 inches.

We only get one chance Apple Education brochure (2002)

This Apple Education brochure was printed on heavy matte paper and featured an idealized message aimed at educators to introduce a vision of a digital-age classroom. All photography in the book features real students in classroom environments and is printed using full-page bleeds (all photos go all the way to the edge of the pages with no borders).

The cover begins with the text “We only get one chance,” and the first two-page spread continued, “to engage them, to set them on the right path, and to prepare them for a world none of us can possibly predict.” The next spread begins with the question “So, what will we do with this chance?”

The next pages are two-page spreads with a full-bleed photo on one side and information on the facing page discussing several categories including Mobile Computing, Wireless Networking, Digital Media, PowerSchool (a student information system no longer owned by Apple), and Apple’s Comprehensive Services.

The final page features a green Apple logo with contact information.

This brochure measures 8 x 11 inches and has 16 pages.

The Apple eMate 300 in education. brochure (1997)

This brochure is titled “The Apple eMate 300 in education.” and is printed on matte, textured paper.

Introduced in 1997, the eMate 300 was a personal digital assistant (PDA) designed specifically for the education market as a low-cost, laptop-like device that ran the Newton operating system. The eMate 300 was the only Newton that had a built-in keyboard, and like all other Newton devices, used a stylus and had a touch screen.

This brochure is a comprehensive description of Apple’s vision for the eMate 300 in education. It included the following sections: introduction; what is the eMate 300?; learning beyond the classroom anytime, anywhere; today’s learning environment; why introduce the eMate into teaching and learning; what comes with the eMate 300; incorporating the eMate in teaching and learning; and lesson ideas for writing and communication, math and analysis, and science and critical thinking.

The introduction begins with the statement, “Apple introduces a product designed with the belief that, given the right tools, students can accomplish extraordinary things.”

The design of this brochure uses pastel colors and a decidedly late-1990s design aesthetic. While the majority of the brochure uses the Gill Sans font, the same font used for the Newton brand identity, Apple Garamond is also used as a contrasting design element throughout the brochure.

This brochure is stapled, measures 8.5 x 11 inches, and has 20 pages.
