The Black Unity Apple Watch Sport Band was part of an effort during the first time Apple referred to a product as part of a “collection”—in this case, to celebrate Black History Month in 2021. According to a press release:
“To celebrate Black History Month, Apple is bringing customers a variety of new and updated collections and exclusive content that highlight and amplify Black creators, artists, developers, and businesses. From curated features across the App Store, Apple Music, the Apple TV app, Apple Books, and Apple Podcasts, to new Apple Maps Guides, the Apple Watch Black Unity Collection, Today at Apple sessions, and more, here is a look at what is in store across Apple’s products and services this February.”
The Apple Watch Black Unity Collection included three elements: “a limited-edition Apple Watch Series 6, the Black Unity Sport Band, and a Unity watch face.” In this example, the Black Unity Apple Watch Sport Band is paired with an Apple Watch Series 7 in silver stainless steel.
Apple described the Black Unity Sport Band:
“Designed by Black creatives and allies throughout Apple to celebrate and acknowledge Black history and culture, the Black Unity Sport Band is inspired by the colors of the Pan-African flag and pays homage to the rich tradition and craft of quilt-making. Three individual pieces of colored fluoroelastomer are assembled by hand and compression-molded as one. Complemented by the dynamic Unity watch face, which displays an ever-changing pattern of irregular shapes as Apple Watch moves, these colors are brought together in a unique tapestry. The innovative pin-and-tuck closure is laser-etched with ‘Truth. Power. Solidarity.'”
During this effort, Apple reported that they would support six global organizations to “help advance their missions in promoting and achieving equality and civil rights in the US and around the world: Black Lives Matter Support Fund via the Tides Foundation; European Network Against Racism; International Institute on Race, Equality and Human Rights; Leadership Conference Education Fund; NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc.; and Souls Grown Deep.”
The International Collection Sport Loop was released at the time of the Summer Olympics played in 2021 (referred to as the 2020 Olympics due to the COVID-19 delay). The bands came in 22 designs “representing nations across the globe, each with a downloadable matching watch face.”
The bands used the Sport Loop design, described by Apple as, “Soft, breathable, and lightweight, it features a hook-and-loop fastener for quick and easy adjustment. The double-layer nylon weave has dense loops on the skin side that provide soft cushioning while allowing moisture to escape. On the reverse side, the attachment loops are securely anchored for superior durability.”
The packaging for each band was highly customized and featured the Apple Watch logo on the box exterior in metallic gold (presumably a reference to Olympic gold medals). The interior packaging used the design of the sport band (as opposed to the generic design used in other Sport Loop designs) and included an App Clip Code (Apple’s custom circular QR Code design) that led directly to a downloadable Watch face that matched the band.

Please note that there is no connection between South Africa and LEGO. When I unpackaged this band, I was immediately reminded of the classic LEGO colors, and I decided to include some bricks in a few of the photos. The actual flag of the Republic of South Africa was designed in 1994 and uses these same colors, but has never evoked a LEGO vibe to me. According to the Southern African Vexillological Association:
“The design…represents a converging of paths, the merging of both the past and the present. Black, gold and green, which were first incorporated into South African national flags in the 19th century, also feature prominently in the flags of the liberation movements, particularly the African National Congress (ANC) and the Pan-African Congress (PAC)… Red, white, blue and green reflect the British and Dutch (later Boer) influence, as shown in the earliest flags flown in South Africa…”

iPod “Take One” store brochures (2004)—Each of these set of three 1-page brochures measures 4.375 x 6.5 inches and features an iPod (“Actual Size”) on the front with a bright pink, bright green, or bright blue background. The back features a photo of the back of the iPod photo with a description of features in an ink color that matches the front. The iPod image is perforated and can be punched out.
iPod mini “Take One” store brochure (2004)—This 1-page brochure measures 4.375 x 6.5 inches and features a pink iPod mini on a white background on the front with various features highlighted. The back has a quirky suggestion about naming playlists and a photo of the back of the iPod mini. The iPod mini image is perforated and can be punched out.
This series of mailings was sent to educators in 2006. The cover of each piece has the title “Rethink.” and discusses a different education topic inside. The cover indicates that this is a series of five, but I only have four of them. The topics include:
Issue 1: Rethink the value of achievement. “You want to give your students and teachers the most powerful learning tools imaginable. So what would you choose? You’d choose intuitive, easy-to-use computers that make lessons a joy and help test scores rise.”
Issue 3: Rethink the possibilities. “Imagine raising achievement across all learning styles and needs. Imagine engaging and motivating every student, allowing all learners to work side by side.”
Issue 4: Rethink how you use your infrastructure. “Your technology infrastructure has the ability to inspire.”
Issue 5: Rethink the frontiers of learning. “The world has changed. No one knows that better than an educator.”
Each folded mailer is 5.625 x 8 inches and unfolds to four horizontal panels. The final panel is a reply postcard inviting the recipient to share their address and get a free item sent to them.
This collection of six silver-metallic-printed bookmarks were packaged in a matching silver envelope with the words “Apple Learning Interchange. A Social Network for Educators.” Each of the six bookmarks were themed, and each theme highlighted five projects that could be found on the Apple Learning Interchange website.
The themes included: Teaching Ideas, Professional Development, Learning Events; Finding Colleagues, Sharing Content, Connecting Globally; Real World Writing; Podcasting, Cut to the Core, Conference Connections; Creative Expression; and Global Awareness.
The Apple Learning Interchange (ALI) program and website are no longer active. ALI was “an Internet community for K-12 educators with a large and participatory membership. Apple has gathered databases of lesson-planning units, Internet resources, and Internet-based projects” (Education World). The Apple Learning Interchange closed in 2010 in favor of iTunes U, “For years the Apple Learning Interchange (ALI) has served as an important resource for educators to access great education content, share best practices, and learn more about using technology in the context of teaching and learning. Over the last three years, iTunes U in the iTunes Store has grown to be an even larger education resource” (MacRumors).
The bookmark envelope measures 2.375 x 7.5 inches, and each of the six bookmarks measure 2.125 x 7.375 inches.
“Think different” was the slogan used by Apple in advertising 1997–2002, and is still used in some circumstances as of 2021. The “Think different” concept was created by advertising agency TBWA\Chiat\Day while working with Apple and Steve Jobs. “Think different” was used in its original concept in a TV commercial and in print/digital advertisements, and the “Think different” slogan was used as part of many TV commercials, print/digital ads, and on product packaging. This advertising campaign was notable in that its original concept did not feature Apple products, just iconic cultural figures that Apple selected to represent their ideals.
Several series of Think different ads were released. The final set of five film directors was never released to the public in poster format, but was run as magazine ads in 2000. This series featured John Huston, Orson Welles, Charlie Chaplin, Francis Ford Coppola, and Frank Capra.
I was able to collect four of five of these magazine ads (I do not have Frank Capra). Each of these ads has been laminated and measures approximately 8 x 10.5 inches.
