AirPort Extreme (Generation 3, Apple Service part, Early 2009)

According to Apple, this AirPort Extreme (Generation 3) provided “simultaneous dual-band wireless 802.11n networking. When you set up your AirPort Extreme Base Station, it creates two high-speed Wi-Fi networks.”

The AirPort Extreme Generation 3 had 5 ports:

  • 1 10/100/1000Base-T Gigabit Ethernet Wide Area Network (WAN) port (for DSL/cable modem)
  • 3 10/100/1000Base-T Gigabit Ethernet Local Area Network (LAN) (for Ethernet devices, such as printers or computers)
  • 1 USB port (for a USB printer, hard disk, or hub)

This device is packaged as an Apple Service part and does not include the retail packaging. The box, labeled Part Number 661-4908, contains the three parts needed to repair or replace the device including a power adapter, a power plug (North America), and a base station.

This AirPort Extreme model was available for less than 8 months before it was replaced by the Generation 4 model. It measured 6.5 x 6.5 inches square and was 1.3 inches tall. It weighed 1.66 pounds.

Apple Logotype Anti-Static Mat (c. 1985)

This anti-static mat was part of a Portable Field Service Kit manufactured by 3M after 1984. It is light gold in color and printed with a black Apple logotype in the Apple Garamond font, Apple’s corporate font used between 1984–2003. Note that the logotype uses a monotone Apple logo (as opposed to the multi-color logo more common at the time) and “Apple Computer, Inc.” (Apple changed its name to Apple, Inc. officially in 2007).

A former Apple repair technician described the mat:

“This utilitarian static mat has turned into a rare collectors’ item from way before Apple was mostly known for their iPhones. It’s a light Gold color, 4 layers thick with soft foam on the bottom and 36 inches long x 23 3/4 inches wide x 3/16 inches thick.”

The upper-right corner of the mat includes a snap to connect grounding cables to prevent electrostatic discharge that could short an electrical component.

According to the Apple repair technician’s post, the mat shipped with an Accessory Package For Portable Field Service Kits that contained the electrostatic wrist strap, a grounding cable, a brochure/manual titled “Static is a touchy business,” and a large yellow workspace sticker that read “ATTENTION STATIC SAFEGUARDED WORK AREA.”

The Apple Logotype Anti-Static Mat in my collection was owned by a former Apple employee and was well used, but in good condition.

Replacement Apple Watch box (2020)

This Apple Watch box contained a replacement Apple watch. The box is sized to only hold the watch body and lacks space for the band, charging cable, and other items in the typical Apple Watch retail packaging.

The box contains a single sheet that shows the words “Need Help?” in several languages on one side and a QR COde on the other side that directs the user to a Support Article, “Use your Apple Watch after service.”

The box is all white and measures 11 x 11 x 2 cm.

An Overview of Apple Products brochure (1996)

This quad-fold brochure from 1996 is titled “An Overview of Apple Products” with the subtitle “Choosing the system that’s right for you.” The opening 2-panel spread is an overview of the brochure with the headline “Apple Macintosh: Ease-of-use, power, compatibility, and multimedia.”

Fully unfolded, the brochure reveals 4-panel spreads that alternate between a photo featuring a product and overview, followed by a spread with a product specifications grid. The sections include: Macintosh Performa and Power Macintosh Computers, Macintosh PowerBook Computers, Displays and Printers, and Apple Servers and Services.

The end pages of the brochure shift focus to discuss ways to use Apple products. Each category uses a four-panel spread and includes Communications, Multimedia, and Publishing. These last three sections include several Apple peripherals from the time, including the GeoPort Telecom Adapter Kit, the Newton MessagePad 130, AppleCD 600e/600i drives, AppleDesign Powered Speakers II, Apple ColorOne Scanners, and QuickTake 150 digital cameras.

Folded, this brochure measures 3.875 x 8.25 inches. I also have a similar version of this brochure from 1995 with product specifications from that year.
